Franklin's Home Keys for Positive Behavior Support
Franklin fosters an encouraging and nurturing learning environment by recognizing and reinforcing students who demonstrate understanding and skills with our 4 "keys": Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. Public recognition and reinforcement occurs in the classroom as well as school-wide on a regular basis.
We would like to invite parents to use the same types of ideas at home. Using PBS at home means:
- reinforcing what is learned at school
- developing an environment that supports the behaviors you desire
- being specific when looking at certain behaviors (when? why?)
- teaching new skills to get the results you want
- noticing and rewarding appropriate behaviors

Let’s look at the four Keys to Success on which Franklin focuses. What do they mean at home? Here are some ideas to get you started……..
Respect
A respectful person:
· tolerates views that differ from his/her own
· is courteous and polite
· shows awareness of how his/her actions affect others
Responsibility
A responsible person:
- thinks before acting
- sets a good example for others
- acknowledges making a mistake
- gets their jobs done

Kindness
A kind person:
- is considerate of other people
- expresses gratitude and forgiveness
- helps people in need
Safety
A safe person:
- obeys laws and rules
- uses self-control
- thinks about consequences before acting
As your children participate in conversations about bringing the Keys to Success into the home, you will find that they have a good grasp on the family rules. Here are some comments that Franklin fourth graders made, connecting to their knowledge about home keys:
“Don’t whine or talk back” (respect)
“Stay out of other people’s problems” (safety)
“Pay attention to little kids” (responsibility)
“Play with your siblings even when you don’t want to” (kindness)
“Don’t leave a mess” (responsibility)
“Turn down the TV” (respect)
“Do your chores” (responsibility)
“Don’t laugh at your siblings” (kindness)
“Don’t run in the house where you’re not supposed to” (safety)
“Ask adults and babysitters if they need help” (respect and kindness)
We hope you enjoy using Keys to Success at home!
Sincerely,
Janie Youderian, Principal
